Interesting that fcpx hasn’t supported this yet but dvr15 has.

Not that it's an excuse, but I think it's low on Apple's priorities for the moment, because FCPX renders much faster than competing software with the built-in hardware. We all guess this is because Apple can finetune their software for their hardware and the other way around.
I hear a lot of people complaining about the performance in DaVinci in comparison with FCPX, so I can imagine the need for them is bigger.
And maybe because they already support more graphics cards because they also are on Windows and Linux.
It would be interesting to do a comparison of Resolve with eGPU vs FCPX without eGPU.

That being said, I would guess that Apple didn't built in eGPU support without any plans of their own software supporting it. I guess we'll see it in the future.

I'm sure it is faster when you compare internals, but there is not going to be any comparison when you can leverage a 1080ti, or even 2 of them for assisting with grading, playback and export. The performance spikes for playing back 4K footage with a grade goes from 3fps to 30fps - pretty incredible on a basic MacBook Pro.

Heck, I even attended a presentation of fcpx 10.4 in London where we were told that VR performance is supported on MacBook Pro as long as you have an eGPU...

As soon as eGPU's are supported in FCPX, I'll be buying a couple of the new MacBook Pro's - that's how much difference I think it will make to remote editing and export.

At NAB, Apple was privately showing an eGPU connected to a MBP. This was mainly for accelerating performance out to the goggles with 360VR under FCPX.

Yes, but the recent upgrade has broken egpu performance

I agree with Mathieu. Resolve really needs things like these to achieve some decent performance on smaller systems, FCP X doesn't. I have seen FCP X working with eGPU to enhance VR, I'm sure this functionality will be restored soon.

TBH, eGPU sometimes makes me think of people like this man. I saw him at the Supermeet, filming with a DSLR and carrying around a convoluted entrapment to get some decent steady shots, monitoring and audio . I think he would have been much better off buying or renting a real shoulder camera in the first place (-:

Ha, good pic - I really can see applications for it with what we do. Previews and exports of red footage on set, working in high resolution on the road - it will make a difference

I know there are many valid reasons to use an eGPU, Tom. And yes, it will definitely make a difference on the road. I was just looking for an excuse to post this picture (-:

Oh yes, I must give credit to Bill Davis for that picture. I shamelessly stole it from his Facebook page because I did not have the time to take a picture myself when I saw that man coming in. BTW: it was great to finally meet you in person, Bill!

Same here, Ronny. I just wish we'd had more time to sit and talk. Hopefully we'll be on the same side of the world again soon!

And feel free to use anything I post, at will. It was, of course, a spur of the moment iPhone snap from the 2018 Supermeet. (And as always, the "best" camera is typically whichever one you happen to be holding when something notable happens!)

As a camera gearhead, I got a good laugh at this pic.
I have witnessed this in so many ways where a hammer is used on a fly :P
I am sure many at that Supermeet were dreading the possibilities of what can go wrong.
And I hope nothing did of course.

If this modular MacPro does come out, that’s when I’m sure you will see eGPU support in FCPX. It would be a perfect launch companion. :)

I like to call the modular approach a Lego Mac Pro. Just wondering if they will have a gold plated option.
