[Shane Ross] "That's funny."

Agreed. I don't think the post has much credibility. It's just more website space filler. But, that rate is rather low, considering it's about the "gig economy". That presumes the FCPX editor is also supplying his/her own gear and software and maybe even working space.

I guess that's one opinion.

And yes, that rate is low, but...basically if you average 24 hours a week and 44 weeks a year, you are at just under $40k. Of course cost of gear, healthcare, etc...

This is where that old school traditional mainstream media still serves a vital role. A publication like the New York times or The Washington Post would carry a lot more weight and legitimacy. It also would greatly help if the article cited real statistical sources for these conclusions.

Windows 10 Pro
i7-5820k CPU
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970
Adobe CC 2018
Renders/cache: Samsung SSD 950 Pro x2 in Raid 0
Media: Samsung SSD 960 PRO PCIe NVMe M.2 2280
Media: OWC Thunderbay 4 x 2 Raid 0 mirrored with FreeFileSync

Just wonder if the reaction would be the same if that same list had placed
Adobe Premiere Pro Editor, or AVID Media Composer editor...in the same position?

Would we all react the same?

It's an interesting exercise in separating preconception from tonality.

FWIW.

[Bill Davis] "Would we all react the same?"

Yes and doubly so from this forum in particular.

Yup, I would have said the same thing.

These days in the states that is being debated in some quarters....

That Rate, and I'm in LA, is what people will pay for work. It's scary. The democratization of the tools, in this case editing software (FCPX, Premiere Pro, etc) makes it cheap to enter the market so if you have the software, by golly, you're an editor.

People don't want to pay for skills or talent. Just the cheapest rate. I once went for an interview and asked the producer 'what especially did you like about my work?' The response: 'I haven't seen your work yet. What's your rate?'

[Warren Eig] "People don't want to pay for skills or talent"

I might argue that NOBODY has ever wanted to pay for skills or talent. Ever.

Those aren’t economic drivers, really - just means to an end.

People only pay for increasing the odds for an improved economic result - or to buy a comforting perception of greater safety.

The reason any editor gets $1000 a day and another gets $40 is because one has a demonstrated ability to work at a level where the economic risk is much higher - and has convinced someone at a decision making level that they are a safer or smarter choice at THEIR price - than someone they can get for less.

And that’s about it.

My 2 cents.

Definitely low 1998 rates for sure! But then I read the bizarre description and thought it was high. ☺

Freelancers using the video editing software must be able to:

Cut video clips and quicken pace
Use transitions
Integrate background music
Employ the latest techniques to captivate audience attention with cuts and motions
Edit scenes using multiple angles

This is a really odd article. Apart from this incredibly generic description (above) and near entry level hourly rate, freelancers can use ANY NLE to do those tasks. I mean, you can use iMovie to "use transitions" 😝 and create "cuts and motions" 😜 As a FCP X user I don't even like seeing FCP X mentioned next to a description like that. Sad!

"The music video of “Despacito,” the second biggest hit in history, was edited using Final Cut Pro X."
That is like saying the Mona Lisa was painted with a brush.

Nope.

It's effectively countering the narrative that "nobody creates excellent paintings using THIS particular type of brush." — an idea that ran rampant for a long time after X was released.

The very familiar refrain was: FCP X is just iMovie Pro - and nobody serious uses it.

This addresses that.
