Archiving is important !

Hi -
we just had a client with a relatively new RAID, that "lost half his data". Now, his drive array did not fail, it did not go into a degraded state, it did not use the RAID5 or RAID 6 function - in fact, the drive is still working, and shows no errors, and you can use the RAID, and you can run Apple Disk Utility Repair Disk, and it shows no errors, but "he lost half his data".

Well, we can speculate all day long on the events one way or another, but the bottom line here is that drive arrays - either by user error, or actual failure, are volatile - and it is CRITICAL to have a LTO or drive archive of your data, because S#$% happens, and you can lose your data. When you don't have an archive, and your data "disappears" - even if your drive array seems to be working 100% - the bottom line is that you MUST maintain an archive in case of failure - due to ghosts, operator error, or actual corruption from the drive array and/or host adaptor.
