LTFS across fiber with HP LTO-5

I'm getting conflicting reports about HP Ultrium LTO-5 fiber drives being compatible with LTFS. Specifically in Quantum scalar libraries. I got one report saying SAS is compatible but not fiber.

Is anybody using HP LTO-5 fiber drives writing to LTFS formatted tapes via OS X?

Thanks
John

The drive will work, but not as a library drive. LTFS is for standalone drives only unless you purchase a wrapper suite like Crossroads suite.

[Tim Jones] "LTFS is for standalone drives"

How do you explain Storage DNA which writes LTFS directly to LTO-5 library drives with no virtualization.

Now what I have run into is that Quantum will not support LTFS across fiber from third party middle ware. It will actually work in the case of Storage DNA but Quantum would prefer you buy this instead:

Oddly they have no problem with LTFS and third parties if it's SAS drives in the library.

I would say that StorageDNA is in the same realm as Crossroads - it's a wrapper that adds layers of functionality and management to the base LTFS layer. LTFS is not handling the robotocs or tape changes, the wrapper software is.

Hi Tim,

The Crossroads StrongBox simplifies file management and expedites retrieval from an LTFS library via a disc caching layer. And yes, policy-based management options for data ingest/egress optimize internal operations, as you mention above. It can be configured with SAS or FC and with leading LTO libraries.

Disclaimer - I work for Crossroads; happy to answer any questions!
