Best Bare external Drive and Dock For Backups?!
on Jan 14, 2013 at 3:18:38 pm

I have been reading thru the forums about the best HD for external system backups ... I will be using the WIN7 backup utility for daily backups.

The one thing I have found on the forums is ...don't buy the cheaper priced drives like the WD Green.

This is a WD Enterprise 2TB for around $200:

Is this a good choice?

Also, I am looking at an Aluratek dock:

My system only has USB 2.0 and Firewire.

Would these 2 products be the way to go?

Many Thanks!

The input you received on not using the low end drives is spot on. We saw huge failures during the hard drive dry spell when all we could get were consumer-level drives. Our failure rate with the non-ES WD drives (Caviar Green and Blue) was over 45% after 4 months at 85% active cycle.

We now use the Seagate Constellation drives here with the Aluratek for system cloning and our large array packages and the drive failure rate is very low (less than 1 in 250) over much use and long periods.

Here's an example link:

Seagate also has 3TB and 4TB models available.
