BRU PE will not restore
on May 7, 2014 at 9:07:57 pm

I've been backing up and restoring projects using BRU PR 3.0.0 under OS 10.5.8. Works great.

I've set up a new hard drive with BRU PE 3.0.2 with OS 10.9.2. Loaded all my catalogs, no problem.

When I try to restore my projects under this new system, I get an error message, "Unable to read archive header. Either the tape is blank or the block size used when creating the archive is not the same as the current value of 2048k."

I have 2048k I/O buffer set in both versions on BRU. All prefs are the same. When I boot back into the previous system, everything works great again. I tried to archive a project in the new system, it wrote the project fine, then said it couldn't verify because of the same error message. Using a HP Ultrium 5.

Any help is much appreciated!

Hi John,

Start by opening a support ticket at support.bru.com. The guys will be glad to assist.

As an aside, what version of tapectl is on the 10.9.2 system? You can check this with:

tapectl -V

If it's not 11.3 or 11.5, please reinstall the BRU PE package.

If it is, what do you get if you put the tape into the drive and execute these commands:

tapectl rewind
tapectl header | bru -gf -

Thanks Tim
I'll open a ticket.

I get 11.3 for the first command and for the second command:
bru: [W039] warning - info block checksum error
bru: [W069] warning - may have to use -F option to read archive

All of this works fine with vers 3.0.0. under OS 10.5.8

Tim,
The issue was resolved with flashing my Atto H680 and installing the new BRU PE vers. 3.1 which was released yesterday.

Hi John,

Great news. We were quite surprised that Apple "downgraded" the ATTO driver in Mavericks. We've discovered that both the ATTO driver in the OS and the older firmware contributed to less than stellar performance under Mavericks.

Silly question, but how were you able to flash your ATTO card? I have the same issue, along with not being about to archive anymore as of a couple of weeks ago. I am using OSx 10.5.8.

You update the firmware version using the ATTO Control Panel. It's available from http://www.ATTOTech.com under Downloads.

Also, be aware that 10.5 is losing all sorts of love in the development arena, so be cautious of any changes on your system. At this stage, we can no longer build tools that will work on systems older than 10.6. Or, tools built on the older platforms act oddly on 10.9.

Thanks for your quick response. support.bru.com doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I am planning to upgrade the OS once I figure out how to mount our XSAN volume on an upgraded OS, but that is another issue. Maybe you can help with my current BRU problem though.

Everything was working great until about 3 weeks ago. Now, when I go to back something up, BRU PE tells me the tape is full, even when it is a brand new one, and won't back up at all. Also, when I go to restore an old project, it is telling me it cannot read header as the tape does not match the block size. I have not changed a single setting.

I do plan to upgrade the entire system, but for now, I just need to get this working. What I am using is,

OSX 10.5.8
BRU PE 2.0
HP StorageWorks 1760 SAS LTO4
ATTO H380 (I know it is old, but it has been flawless for the past 5 years) Any suggestions would be a great help.

Thanks Tim,

I was able to download the driver and re-install it. I am still facing the same issues though.

Hi Tim,

I did connect with them and they were incredibly helpful and thorough. Unfortunately, we determined this was a hardware issue. I sent it for repair and they told me the drive was essentially toast. We will be upgrading to a new machine. I am just unsure as to which one at the moment. As long as LTO-6 is backwards compatible, at least being able to restore from old tapes, I will likely go that route. Thanks for your help and responses.

Nate

That's the good thing about LTO - LTO-6 with read and write LTO-5 and read LTO-4. Basically - write two generations and read three.
