Is Commotion Still Available?
on Apr 1, 2005 at 1:32:08 am

A friend wanted to mask a talking head out of one background and into another in Premiere. I recommended Commotion which I got in DV form with Final Cut Pro 1.25. However I can't find it on Pinnacle's website but do see it at different prices from different vendors. Has Pinnacle stopped making it? Is there another solution as easy as rotosplining?

Commotion is dead. The two apps to look at as a replacement are Curious gFx and Silhoutte Roto (no paint).

Depends on what you would like to do.

Roto can be defined as just cutting mattes with shapes to define an alpha channel, or it could also mean frame by frame painting. Silhouette has better masking tools, and directly exports to all of the compositors. gFx does raster paint as well, and still has better than avg mask tools.

but there are others, like After Effects and Combustion, that do both and much more.

what method were you most interested in? and what are you hoping to do eventually, once you have roto under control?

It's not "alive"... they just happen to still "try" to sell it. They are also selling my Commotion VHS tapes which were updated to DVD three years ago... they sell VHS for $279 "on sale", which brand new DVD's at Toolfarm are $99.
