T2i and green screen
on Aug 24, 2011 at 1:40:55 am

Doing a green screen shoot soon and had a few workflow questions.

Is the t2i a better choice over the hpx170?
Should we transcode in FCP to ProRes 422 or 444?
Would using the technicolor cinestyle benefit anyway with keying?
Are there any magic lantern features that benefit?
Is there any way to shoot in 444 color space with a t2i or hpx170?

[Brandon Morris] "Is the t2i a better choice over the hpx170?"

From what I read, the HPX170 has an HD-SDI output with uncompressed HD at 10-bit and 4:2:2... If that's true, the HPX170 is the way better choice for greenscreen work.

[Brandon Morris] "Should we transcode in FCP to ProRes 422 or 444?"

IMHO this doesn't really matter. With a T2i you're starting with 4:2:0 material and just "wrap" it in 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 - so no more information after transcoding.

[Brandon Morris] "Would using the technicolor cinestyle benefit anyway with keying?"

Anything that improves picture qualitity improves the keying process, but I can't say anything about the Cinestyle and keying. If I have to do keying with Canon footage (which is not the best source footage hence the extreme compression), I'd rather choose the "Faithful" style since it is said to provide better color-information.

[Brandon Morris] "Are there any magic lantern features that benefit?"

Yes. The possibilities to shoot with multiples of ISO 160 that reduce noise drastically.

[Brandon Morris] "Is there any way to shoot in 444 color space with a t2i or hpx170?"

With the T2i: no. With the HPX170: I don't think so...
