"A data handler needed by the movie could not be found" Canon 7d

Hi everyone,

We were filming interviews using the Canon 7D. When the camera reached its 4GB capacity, the camera did not stop recording... it froze!

The files could not be previewed on the camera playback, but the data was on our CF card, now on a hard disk. They are corrupt .mov files of 3.99 GB which CANNOT be opened.

When trying to open these files, an error message reads: "The file is not a movie file" or "A data handler needed by the movie could not be found"...

I tried opening the videos with VLC, Quicktime and MPEG Streamclip... nothing.

Please help us save these files! Is there anyone out there who knows how to open or convert these corrupted files?

Many Thanks,
Sharif in Montreal

I haven't used it myself (thank god the situation hasn't come up for me.)

But some quick Google research showed up a couple of posts from people who seem to like...

Data Rescue 3 at Prosoftengineering.com

as a CF file recovery utility that runs about $100.

I know NOTHING about it first hand - just passing along info from another thread here on the Cow board.

YMMV.

Good luck.
