Very bad picture quality

Hello all,

I have just begun shooting video, I am really enjoying it but I am concerned my 5D MKII maybe unwell.

***MEDIAFIRE link below*

I am using the 24-70 L older type lense and I am getting a lot of noise and strange artefacts when filming.

This example is the worst probably, I am using a Neewer lighting kit, my exposure meter on the camera is centred and my ISO is abiding by the 160,320, 640 idea of less noise. I think the example is ISO 320, fstop 4 or 5.6.
1080p 25fps and 50 shutter speed.

I have been trying all kinds of combinations of ISO, aperture and getting disturbingly poor results.

I cannot get anything remotely sharp or close to nice looking.

If anyone can identify what they are seeing that would be great.

Thanks,

Jonathan

It looks fine. Welcome to video -- the resolution is far poorer than still photography, Get used to it.

Hi David, yes I thought there maybe an element of that alright.

But after doing a lot more experimenting I realised the lighting in the original clip may not have been enough, I have been practicing focus today in daylight and I'm very happy with the sharpness etc.

The footage is shaky to begin with but the 2nd half is better.

I will put a youtube link up soon.

Cheers,

Jonathan

Do you have a fluid-head tripod at the very least?

I do indeed, and have access to a couple of good quality ones if needed.

Here's the improved footage, It's far from perfect but for shooting musical performances it's a good base to start from.

A musical performance? You'd better shoot some tests before you have to shoot the real thing!

I'll bet you're not aware of video's very narrow dynamic range compared to still photography. The high-contrast lighting typical of musical performances is guaranteed to give fits to a newcomer.

"Well, I've seen concerts with high-contrast lighting, and it looks just fine."

That's because you don't know about the additional lighting used to flatten out the contrast of the shot.

I have it all planned, It is not a concert, but more a performance purely for the video.

The room will have similar light to the video above, no typical stage lighting or audience.

Have you tried experimenting with Magic Lantern RAW? It's a hack that let's you shoot RAW with your MKII. Huge dynamic range increase and because it is RAW you can do so much more in post with the footage.
