What software to use to monitor and capture video from a C100 on a Mac?
on Aug 19, 2015 at 12:41:37 pm

Hey,

Is there a nice configuration to capture video from a C100 through HDMI, monitor, record, and maybe even color correct directly on a Mac (with HDMI or thunderbolt input)?
I usually use Premiere... can it do that? Or Resolve...? Or any other way?

Thx!

It sounds like you want to capture the C100's signal in realtime to your Mac. You'll need a capture card, like an Intensity Pro or Decklink card from Blackmagic - https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products - and you'll also need hard drives capable of reading/writing data fast enough to keep up with your codec of choice. And since you're computer will be doing the conversion to ProRes or DNxHD or whatever you'll need enough horsepower for that to keep up in realtime.

With all the inexpensive external recorders these days (Atomos, Blackmagic, Convergent Design, Video Devices, etc), I don't see many people dragging their computer out as a capture station. If you're more concerned with monitoring a picture from your Mac onto a TV screen or color calibrated display then Blackmagic is the least expensive option out there for external display.

Thank you for your reply Ryan, much appreciated. I have a fast Mac Pro and I suppose if it's fast enough to convert to Prores, my drives should be able to support the speed. What software should I use then?

What about if it's just for monitoring, what would you recommend?

Thx!

Yep. You need a PCIe card that can ingest the signal. FPC7, Premiere, Blackmagic Desktop Video - all would capture the signal from a C100. But the card is needed as the interface between the camera and the computer. The HDMI ports on Mac laptops or trash cans is an output port only. They don't ingest signal.

Adobe Prelude can do ingesting as well. That's probably why Warren brought it up.
