Updating firmware on canon 7D
on Jan 31, 2015 at 2:30:09 pm

Hello all,

I want to install Magic lantern on my 7D but I want to upgrade my firmware first. I am currently on 1.2.4. Can I just jump to 2.0.5 or do I have to install every update in between 1.2.4 and 2.0.5?

Thanks.

You can just jump to the latest firmware. No need to step up to each one.

Have you verified that ML works with the firmware you're moving to? ML does not always support the latest Canon firmware and moving to the latest may jeopardize your ability to run the ML hack.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks, Yep, I went ahead and installed the latest firmware but ML didn't support it. However, luckily for me canon's firmware can be downgraded. I had to downgrade to 2.0.3 and then everything worked.

Glad it worked out for you. A word of note to you or anyone who stumbles across this thread in the future...it's also a really good idea to keep a folder of firmware versions in case you need to roll back to a previous one. Many manufactures (Canon included) will discontinue offering an older firmware as they look to support only the newest technology. So keeping a folder on a thumb drive or a local drive (or Dropbox) can be invaluable should you need to roll back to a version that you can't find online any longer.

Just my $.02
