highlights in RAW on a 5D2

Hello.

I'm not sure I've come to the right place with my question, but I tried to post this on the cinema5d forum yesterday, but still my post hasn't been approved by the administrator, so I'm giving it a go here!

I'm having problems with highlights in a shot that was shot in Raw mode with the Magic Lantern firmware on a 5dM2.

It's an exterior traveling shot in the snow of somebody running and I'd like to bring down the highlights as much as possible.

I do this by going into the Raw dialogue box from within After Effects where I've imported my dng sequence. In the "basic" tab, I put the highlights down to -100, hit ok and return to AE. Now, when I render out the clip, the highlights result in flickering. It's like as if there is some kind of automatic compensation going on. To put it differently, it seems like the highlight settings I applied weren't applied uniformly throughout the sequence.

I hope somebody here can be of assistance,

best regards.

Have you tried using Davinci Resolve? There is a free Lite version. Unlike Adobe RAW which only allows you to color correct on one frame, Resolve will let you access and look at all the frames to color correct. Then let Resolve export the appropriate File for editing.

No, I haven't tried.

I've been working on AE for the last 10 years, and I'm reluctant to make such jumps.

Do you honestly think this could fix my problem?

Say, Warren.

I wanted to give Resolve a spin, but the lite version on their site is only available for macos 10.8.5 or later.

I'm running 10.6.8 - you wouldn't happen to know if there is an older version of Resolve that could work for me?

Resolve 8 should work if you can find it.

Thanks I found it!

Might give it a spin once I get the time...

Try using the stabilizer in CS 5.5.2 Premiere Pro and save still image ???????????

I still reckon you will have to convert to jpeg ? This is really outside the box.

Thanks Bob, though I wonder how stabilizing the shot can solve my problem.

And Warren, I might just try your solution, I just hope the learning curve with Resolve isn't too steep.

But it's still frustrating, is there no one out there that has run into this problem, or can tell me why this problem occurs?

Enginn,

it was only a long shot, if you have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 or 6 just introduce the still flickering shot on to the timeline and stabilize it.We use the Adobe approved plug-in the German Pro Dad Mercalli V2 May be worth a try.

We use Canon 5 D Mark II,s all the time , but, not as adventurous as you, we are mad enough ?

Good luck ,Warren does make more sense. You could try Canon Photo Digital Professional that came with the camera, we use it all the time.
