Why is Canon 5D Mark 111 HDMI output 1080i 59.97 ?
on Aug 21, 2014 at 2:52:03 pm

Interlaced output, why on the Mark3 ? I am doing some tests with the Canon 5D Mark3 in the studio, recording the HDMI output to the AJA IO HD, trying to get PRORES HQ at 1920x1080 24p .. To my surprise, the "mirrored" output of the Mark 111 , even though the camera is recording at 1920x1080 29p is outputting via the HDMI cable , at 1080i at 59.97. Does anyone know why the camera is NOT outputting 24p ?

You wrote 29p did you mean 24p?

Mine outputs to 1920x1080 23.976fps as it should. That's the whole point. How are you testing and confirming it is 59.97?

Mark you should double check your settings in camera and on the AJA box. On my 5D if I set it to 1080p24 (23.976) it sends that out the HDMI port. I'm verifying that via a SoundDevices PIX240 external recorder.

It sounds like one of your devices in the chain isn't setup correctly or is incorrectly interpreting the signal.

[Mark Shepherd] "Thanks, I have checked everything possible."

It's your IO HD. It can't take in 1080p24 signal. It can only output 1080p24. Page 15 of the manual states:

[AJA IO HD Manual] Formats supported (video only):
525i, 625i, 720p 50/59.94/60, and 1080i 50/59.94/60 are supported on input and output.

1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, and 1080p30 are supported for
output only."

You'll need to update to a more modern IO device for capture. The IO HD was made back in 2007 as one of the first ProRes over Firewire IO devices certified by Apple. 2007 the 1080p24 format was not nearly as prevalent as it is today.

Thanks Ryan for the info. What is strange is that is detects the signal out of the Mark 3 as 1080i 59.57, even when it is set to 108024p. It is a false detection.

I'm not positive that it's a false detection. Canon's cinema series (C100/300) actually sends a 1080i59.97 signal out of it's cameras when recording 1080p23.98, with a flag in the stream to denote a 3:2 pulldown needs to be applied. So devices like SoundDevices PIX, Atomos Blade, Convergent-Design Odyssey will detect the flag and pull down a clean 1080p23.98 image.

I'm wondering if the DSLR does this as well since your IO HD is able to detect a signal. But on my other recorders my 5D3 shows 1080p23.98 as the input signal with no pulldown. DSLR's aren't made for video....that's for sure! :-)

The benefit though, is that if your IO HD can see the signal coming from your 5D3 then it can output to 1080p23.98. So you can still get to your final format without having to upgrade I/O devices as a suggested earlier.

Ryan:

Thanks for the info. U Da Man... Will try to output the 1080i signal to 1080 23.97p as you suggested.
