Frame rate head spinner??
on Jan 26, 2013 at 10:30:45 pm

So I am about to shoot a project and would like to go 24fps. But will be shooting some action where I would like slo-mo. will shoot that at 720/60. For editing how would the best way to set this shoot up be?

Should I shoot 1920x1080 at 24fps for b-roll and then take the 720p60 footage and convert it to 1920x1080 with mpeg streamclip then use cinema tools to go to 24fps?

Or should I shoot 1920x1080 24fps and convert that to 720? to match the slomo?

Timeline can be 1280x720. video is for web use only.

Maybe a confusing question but I am confused as to how to best manage the frame rate discrepancy.

Thanks!

What resolution you want to export? If it's 1280x720, then convert all clips conforming with it. Or you don't have to decide the resolution first, make sure all clips have same codec, edit all of them in a timeline (1280 or 1920), clips can be fit in timeline. Then choose what resolution at the exporting step.

Hey Thanks for the reply, been hitting this hard for that last hour or so. Been some serious discussions about this but still looking for a confirm.

It's sounding like if I were to export 1280x720 for web use I could use either resolutions- BUT make sure to conform to the 720p60fps footage to 24fps to match frame rates to either the 1920x1080 24fps or 1280x720 24fps timeline. Making sure the frame rate matches as the higher priority. I could use a 1920 or 1280 timeline with the same results.

New question now is can I export to 1920x1080 from a 1280x720 timeline with results good enough for big screen/film festivals?

If that would not be good enough, can I do a 1920x1080 24p timeline- bring in 720 footage then rescale it shot by shot? In the webosphere it sounds like people have done that with professional results? Seems to me upscaling like that would degrade quality?

OR?-Would it be better to mpeg streamclip the 720p60 footage to 1920x1080 60fps then CONFORM to 24fps to match the natively shot 1920x1080 24fps from my 6d? Not sure if this would be better than just rescaling in fcp?

Gawd! I've been at this part time for over 10 years and still head spinning

UPDATE:

Ok IN FCP7 I am getting better quality on converted prores footage that matches the resolution in the timeline so 1920 footage in a 1920 timeline is great 1280 footage in a 1920 timeline looks bad. Same as 1280 footage in a 1280 timeline looks great but 1920 in a 1280 looks bad.

Did some exports and still looks as it does in FCP.

So I guess that theory or putting different sized shots in the same timeline is'nt best practice?

Now I'm worried. I guess I could shoot everything in 720p 60 conform everything to 24fps and speed up all the clips I dont want in slomo? But that seems unecessary.
