5D Mark II 24p Audio Sync?
on Mar 3, 2011 at 9:27:52 am

Hi,

I have a 5D shoot coming up. Client wants it to be shot at 24p. Audio will be recorded externally and we will use a clap board as well.

So now the questions i have are - :)

Q1. Is it true 24p or 23.98?

Q2. How would I make sure the audio is synced? any settings in the audio recorder?

Thanks!

We just did a shoot.Use a separate WAV file recorder. Use a Time code slate/ with clapper. Then sync to the TC on the slate. Have your sound guy lay TC on the audio. IN NO WAY USE AUDIO FROM THE CAMERA-it's really bad. I believe the 5d is running at 23.98. Syncing Works fine in FCP. Good luck!

Thanks Bill!

We're using the Zoom H4n with a direction mic on a boom.

Just a quick question - will you do your edit on a 24p timeline or A 23.98?

If the final output is a DVD what would you suggest?

Thanks

Re: 5D 24p and Zoom audio drifting in Final Cut Pro

FOUND AN ANSWER***
Found out something interesting about importing audio in Final Cut Pro that happens behind the scenes. You MUST have your easy setup set to your current framerate you want to use with your audio BEFORE importing your audio. FCP transcodes your audio to that framerate ON IMPORT!

I originally had mine set to 24p and then dragged my audio into my Bin. There was my problem. Later, I deleted my zoom audio, set my easy setup to 23.98 and reimported my audio. Wallah! Everything was in sync. Crazy weird issue, but that's how FCP does it.

Apple please give us that option on import of audio!! Thanks.

Don't let people scare you about recording directly into the 5D, I shot this video (Link below) as a test with my Rode NTG-2 plugged directly into the camera with the manual setting just below half, and it's certainly acceptable.

I am going to add a Juicedlink box to make it even better and that will go into the camera as well.

So just know you do have other options if you don't like to sync like me.

You can also run your H4n cable into the camera to have redundant recording. Plus you'll have two copies of your audio in case of a card crash.

Thanks Brent,

Is there any loss through the 1/4" cable? ( not sure about the cable specs :) )
