Best way to send big HIDEF files

I am working on a project where in a few weeks, simultaneous events will be happening in major cities across the USA and Europe on a given day and we will be organizing HIDEF professionals to be shooting approximately 3- 5 hours of footage on various acquisition formats.

That material needs to be sent to a central edit room in NYC and I am trying to figure out the best way to get the footage from the operators to the edit room in NY in a manner that is most efficient time wise and dollar wise.

Five hours of HIDEF footage seems unmanageable to send to an FTP site unless you have a week to upload it and same to download and sites like YouSendIt also have upward limits of 10GB

Does anyone know of any other manner in which this footage can be sent from a multitude of locations in a reasonably rapid manner other than over-nighting either the cards they were shot on or dumping to small field drives and sending those?

Thanks!
Dan

Hey Daniel,

You didn't mention what the end project was for? i.e. online, ppt or digital cinema etc?

Assuming that you don't want to compress the footage to mp4 or WMV?

Depending on what camera you are using and editing kit, you should be able to use proxies delivered by internet and then have the main files delivered by courier.

Alternative is a "play-out" via satellite or line delivery - which is very expensive. Poor man version is to play the video out via a high-end video conferencing suite - some of the financial institutions has the equipment and bandwidth to make that happen, if you can get past the IT security gateway...

Thanks Mads
The organization sponsoring these events isnt quite sure how the material will be utilized although most likely it will be for the web. But you never know. Thanks for your info, I'll pass it along

best

Honestly, I don't know if there is any decent way. Mads reply is sensible but proxy files take time to encode and upload.

Speedwise, I would skip proxy files which would take a day or more to process and opt to offload footage onto a travel drive or blu-ray data disc that can be FedEx'ed. Blu-rays would be the cheapest storage medium, and teams without burners can rent them for a cheap rate.

Data will need to be couriered regardless as it's too much data to transmit unless each camera team has a business grade upload connection available to them. Your biggest issue isn't what file service you choose, but the speed of each team's upload connection.

Fast or free, this isn't a situation where you can have both.
