i've come to love this head in the few months i've been using it, though a problem surfaced. i'll try my best to describe the problem

the head is loose when panning....once the tripod performs a pan to the left, it will give slightly back to the right before the resistance kicks in, and instead of holding the camera steady it can shake back and forth with absolutely no resistance.

there has to be a way to resolve this, any takers?

Hi Brian, does it matter if it is hot or cold when this happens, or is it happening all the time? Either way, I definitely would recommend calling the manufacturer or your dealer if possible. Sounds like a flaw in the head, or a fluid leak. Not acceptable!

I have had a 501 head for a number of years. It has a problem called "stiction". After it has been sitting for awhile (like in a stage shoot) it requires a lot of effort to get it to tilt and the resulting jerk is often noticeable in the footage.

The problem has never been addressed by Manfrotto and also exists in the 503 head. The reason is that it is not a true fluid head but rather a sandwich of discs with grease smeared between them.
