Documentary advice?
on Dec 9, 2010 at 9:22:47 am

Hi, I am interested in getting advice on sound/video/lighting to be able to produce a high quality documentary with video to be shot in both externally and internally.

I have the following equipment already and thus would not want to upgrade that at the moment due to costs for upgrading of these items:

Cameras:
Canon HV30
Canon HV40
Merlin Steadicam
Velbon D600 Tripod (only have 1) which other should I purchase?

Lighting:
Sachtler Reporter 300H

I dont have any of the following:

Filters for the cameras are these needed? and which ones would would be good?
For sound which mics for use internally in interview scenarios and which mics for external use?

Any other advice would be most welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

N. Rekoba

These are rather broad questions. For example, I'm not sure if you need filters. What are you shooting? What's the nature of the documentary? Who is shooting it - are you hiring a professional DP or are you doing it yourself? Will there be a sound person, other crew? Why do you need a second camera? What are you using that for? etc etc.

Hello Nathan,

I would add at least China Ball light fixture capable of using a 100 -150 watt bulb and a Router Speed controller from Harbor Freight for a dimmer.

For audio, mixer, (sound devices 302), Sony MDR 7506 headphones, a hardwired lav, a wireless lav, a boom, a suspension mount, some sort of fixture that allows the boom to be locked down on a c or light stand.

If you want to shoot outside, you'll need wind protection for the mic.

Happy shooting.
