Which mic to use?
on May 8, 2016 at 2:13:12 am

I will be shooting dialog of several kids inside a camping tent. The only mic I currently have is a Rode shotgun which I know from experience is no good too close to the subject (too bassy). I don't want to use lavs. What mic should I use that's under 1,000? Thanks in advance.

You didn't mention WHICH "Rode shotgun" you are talking about. They now have a rather wide range of different mics which may be called "shotgun".

Are you REALLY anticipating having the mic so CLOSE to multiple subjects that you will invoke the proximity effect? That doesn't sound like a "shotgun" mic from your description.

How big is this tent? How stiff is the fabric? Low frequencies typically ignore barriers of fabric. So your tent may not be a "small space" at low frequencies.

The typical microphone used in reflective spaces (indoors) is a hyper-cardioid. But most of the shorter "shotgun" mics from Rode are more like hyper-cardioids than true shotgun (line-gradient) mics.

Have you actually TRIED your microphone in a tent? Or is your trepidation only theoretical?

A Rode NTG3 is what I have experience using. I've recorded several large projects but up to now haven't tried to use any mic other than the one mentioned and a lav a few times.

It's a 6 person camping tent which will have 5 kids in it. I may end up cutting the top out for better access. Can't try anything yet till I get the tent.

I hadn't thought about the fabric's stiffness. "Skillful" audio recording is still a bit of a mystery to me but fun to learn.

So what would be a hyper-cardioid mic that's equivalent in price/performance to a Rode NTG3?
