What would be the best field mixer or audio recorder for canon 5d mark ii
on Aug 19, 2014 at 1:06:29 pm

Hi there,

Please I need your help.

I have canon 5d mark2 and I need a really good quality sound for interviews and indoor dialogue for indie filmmaking and docs. I was thinking to get one of these mics Audix SCX1/HC or AT4053b and after reading some threads here decided to go for Audix.

But now I need either audio recorder or field mixer or both. Please I need your help here as I am no sound person. I was looking in something like zoom H4n, but I read is actually no good for hiss/noise. I could spend up to £400 or 650 in us dollars.

What would be the best solution in this situation? Any input is much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Agnes

Hello Agnes and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Brian makes a good suggestion. Be aware that the DR-60D eats batteries quickly, so get an external USB power supply as well.

Here's my review of it.

Hi Agnes - the £195 Tascam DR-60D recommended by Brian and Ty is a great choice - but, at a slightly higher price point, you may be able to do better for pro interviews and indie films.

A Sound Devices 702 would be the absolute best choice, but it far exceeds your budget - that said, it might be worth it to stretch your budget a little to see if you can afford a £599 Fostex DC-R302.

This is a robust, all-metal recorder designed for field use. It has three XLR inputs (as opposed to the Tascam's two) and better signal to noise and harmonic distortion numbers.

This recorder also has a "Remote Start" function that allows your camera’s video recording to start and stop in sync with the Record button, via infrared triggering or a wired connection. This function only works with the Canon 5D Mark II.

Here's a B&H Camera hands-on review of this recorder (tested with the 5D Mark II):

Highly recommended.

Hope this is helpful!

Thanks Brian! Excellent review Ty and it looks like a good option.

Thanks Bill, I'm going to ckeck out Fostex DC-R302 too. But if I would stretch my budget for a few hundred pounds more and I saw a used Sound Devices 302 selling for £600 what would be better choice old SD or new Foxtex? or it's a completely wrong question :)

Best wishes,
Agnes

Hi Agnes - a used Sound Devices would be better than a new anything else :)

You may still want to get it checked out at one of these authorised Sound Devices dealers in the UK.

Best of luck!
