We're in the middle of filming documentary, have a big sync problem

Hi there smart people,
I really need your advice with this audio recording/sync problem.

We are filming documentary on a busy market. We are using Canon C300 with mic on it and we're recording audio separately.
Sometimes, audio guy is very close to the camera and sometimes is 15-20 meters away. We cannot use clapper or even clapping with hands or announcing the shots because it's to distracting to people we are filming.
After first day of filming we've found out that we have a huge sync problem.
We tried PluralEyes, but it's useless. I guess the problem is that audio from camera and audio recorder are too different.
Now we are thinking of buying Tiny Lockit TC generator and maybe Sync'N'Link for FCP7.
Does anyone have any experience with that generator or any form of TC syncing?
Or maybe some other advice? I still need to sync that first day with over 200 shots i have to sync manualy "by ear".

Thank you

Seth

Hello Seth and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Sorry for your pain.

What are you recording the audio on?

What sample rate are you using? It should be 48 kHz

Does this recorder record SMPTE time code? If so, is it set to the same time code as the camera?

Sync can slip over long times without SMPTE. The longer the more slippage. If you're using short clips interspersed throughout a long interview, you may be able to pick your in/out points for the clip and make them work.

The problem is with the C300. It does not hold internal tc on it's own. It wanders & drifts. You're going to need an external tc source connected to the camera that has been jammed from the soundmixers recorder to get matching sync between the recorder & the camera.

While it might be too late now for this project, another way of insuring sync is to have the soundmixer send a wireless audio feed to the camera.

Hi guys,
I apologise for not replying sooner. We tried with TC free run on both camera and sound recorder, and then sync them on FCP timeline. Still we need to tweak them manually, but at least we have paired shots.
We're planning of buying TC generator for C300, I think that will solve our problem.

Thanks
Seth

I agree with Eric. Why not record sound on the C300. It's excellent. Never a chance of slippage and you'll save time in post, too.

Sending a scratch mix to the C300 with a low cost wireless mic kit is a good inexpensive solution if your recorder does not have TC. Then Plural Eyes can easily synch the shots for you. I have a Tascam DR680 that is able to mix down all six tracks to one channel and I take that to my C100 by cable or wireless, with a backup mic on Ch1 scratch mix on 2; works for me, no TC gear needed and is a low cost solution.
