Which mic for static mic stand and slightly moving subject?
on Jun 18, 2014 at 8:10:53 pm

Hi there,

I need to film a subject who will be bending down to open a guitar case while talking. The shot will be handheld and its a one man crew so the mic will be static in a c-stand. What mic/technique would be best for this? I have a hypercardiod (MKH50) but fear it will be too directional.

Thanks!

Hello Terry and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

You concerns are well founded. There is not at this time an elastic microphone. There is no boomable mic that will deliver sound properly when someone bends over from a standing position to speak to the floor.

If the person is in an acoustically treated recording studio and is only going from seated to floor, you can do pretty well by hanging a Schoeps cmc641 just out of frame and angled down to catch the guitar playing and his presentation. Like this.

Standing is a bit of a stretch, though. In a regular space is also problematic. What will work is a headworn mic like the Countryman E6. It can be wired or wireless.

I'm assuming that this is narrative work, since you know in advance what the person will be doing. Why does s/he have to bend over while delivering the line?

BTW, I don't consider someone who is standing then bends over to the floor a "slight" movement.

Peace,

Bob

Put the guitar case on a high stool or small table. Problem solved.
