external power for SD 552

I want to find a cost effective way of powering my 552, without going down the NP1 route.....it seems for a simple set up of two batts, cup, plus charger I need several hundred $$.
Looking around there are radio control batteries (NiMh) that come in various voltages, like 7.2, 9.6, 12v. Not expensive, and I am very competent with making up electrical stuff. For similar volts/capacity, I can be all set up for around $100.
Has anyone been down this route and can share their experiences?

I use small SLA batteries on my SD442 mixer it gives me abou 1/2 day (change at lunch break). [Battery 12v 1.3AH]

Very cheap, works well and enough power to run the mixer, radio mics or recorder, 12v charger for phones and a strip of LEDs for night shoots.
I have made a master switch with 2x DC inputs, the batteries can be 'HOT' swapped even during a 'take'.

I need it to fit the Petrol bag and not be too heavy...although this...http://www.componentshop.co.uk/12v-3700mah-sc-nimh-battery-pack.html is no lightweight, it would fit the bag.
I like NiMh because of the high capacity.
Did you fit an inline fuse to protect your gear?

No didnt worry about a fuse, I don't often do over the shoulder shoots, most of my shoots are TV commercials where you can put the mixer kit on a chair or table so weight isn't a primary consideration.

I have also made an adaptor to go to a 4 pin XLR.... Got more than a few camera ops out of the poo either to run their camera or video monitor.

Hello Rob and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

I use a rechargeable pack from BatteryGeeks and had the power lead terminated so it works with my 442 or 664. They were very helpful on the phone.
