Converting Audio Files to Editable Text
on Oct 30, 2012 at 5:38:42 pm

I work as an instructional technologist at a community college and we have a big problem. I have instructors who want to use videos in their online classes, but we are required to close caption any media of that type that we use. We are currently using Camtasia and Amara to develop the captions but it is slow, tedious work typing out the script.

I'd like to find a way to take the audio track of a video file and convert it to editable text (in essence the opposite of text to speech). I know that the conversion won't be perfect, but I feel that the effort to correct words would be easier than transcribing the videos.

Does anyone know of a solution that would take an audio file or the soundtrack to a video and convert it to editable text? I'd like a cross-platform solution (i.e. both Windows and Mac OS X).

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Adobe Premiere Pro
I've never used the feature, so I don't know how accurate it is.

"Speech Analysis
Turn spoken dialog into timecode-accurate text. Search keywords to jump to specific dialog, or even cut video based on the transcript. Reference scripts boost accuracy."

Hello Terry and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Dragon is a free mac-based app that does speech to text conversion.

Dragon appears to be iOS only. David wanted something cross-platform for the desktop/laptop. I can't find anything else.

Terry,

Really? Try putting voice-to-text converter in Google.

Tons of audio transcription software out there but Nuance's Dragon (available for PC and Mac) is probably the most efficient, reliable one. More info here: http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm

I have been sitting here for days, transcribing dialogue from interviews, does this work for on camera talent?

How long does it take to "train" the program for someones voice? Can the talent read a few paragraphs and then can I adjust the program in post?

Interesting!

Part of this discussion, and it's a critical point, is the desire to "take the audio track of a video file and convert it to editable text."

Dragon is licensed to one voice only which means each instructor would have to purchase a license in order to use the conversion technology.

I am on a hunt for the same sort of features (professors who do interviews with authors they then want in transcript format) and I've come to the conclusion that if there is a software solution out there, it is the product a highly secretive [;-)] software vendor who is carefully hiding it from potential users.

I'm off to search among conference professionals to see if they have discovered any solutions.

Same opinion as Edgar. I have also been using http://www.speechtotextservice.com for all my interview processes for one year. It is just amazing.

Hi, I've read what you said about http://www.speechtotextservice.com but your comment is a bit old. Do you guys still recommend this? I've read somewhere that this is amazing but I would like the inside of someone that actually uses the service...

Have you tried the audio to text conversion called ScribeOn, sir? I've used it several times and I testify that the outcome is very accurate. The transcriber who did my work was a 100% English-speaking native from the USA. Their service rate is very affordable which did not hurt my pocket. Maybe you should try their service and see if it might be helpful to you. I believe that this is their webpage: http://scribeon.com/

Hi Guys,

Good day to all of you and glad to seeing you all once again. I just want to inform and share to all of you that I've recently found a new and innovative Audio and Video transcription service which also provides subtitling and captioning service. They can also do transcription of different languages. The price is cheaper by half the price with what I was using previously as I've mentioned above and the turnaround time is much faster!

Check them out guys at http://owltranscription.com/. They've just recently launched and their clients are increasing enormously and giving positive feedbacks. If you're still in need of transcription, I highly recommend you try this.

Hope this helps once more.

You can use transcription module of Speechpad.pw service. Look at the youtube video of

in this module. The service use Google speech API to make the draft of transcription. Then you can use time stamps to edit the draft result.
