On top of the camera is almost NEVER a good spot for any microphone. Too far away from whatever you are trying to pick up, and too close to noises from the camera and the camera operator. And shotgun mics are frequently "confused" by close reflections when used indoors.

An on-camera shotgun is NOT optimal for most of the applications you list. Particularly for wedding ceremonies and stage plays, I would expect rather poor performance.

But if you want an on-camera shotgun mic, the Rode has a decent reputation. I have an NTG3 myself which I use on a boom pole.

Friends of mine who are "Event Videographers" (weddings, etc) use their on camera mics for general room ambience and always on a seperate track. I doubt any of them has a camera mic that costs more that $150 and most use what came with the camera for that job.

Hello Jim and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Richard and Eric are spot on. A mic on a camera is too far away to get good sound. Shotgun mics are OK in some instances, but you can do better with a super or hypercardioid, but you have to get closer.

Here's a little video that may help to explain why.

Great video Ty. I think a lot of people will get valuable info from that.

I only wish that youd also had the camera mic running to your mixer to let people hear how terrible that would sound in contrast to your 4 pro mics.
Good job
Peter

Peter,

Thank you. There I was with a friend's camera and wondering what to do with it. I got the idea and thought, "Hey, people will be able to hear the difference!"

I have written thousands of words trying to explain the problem with camera mic. A moving picture is worth 1000 words! :)

You're right. A camera mic track would have been very telling.

Regards,

Ty

Yes.
When you started talking at the beginning of the video I thought "what a tight crisp solid mic sound that is. I cant see the mic. Then you revealed the face mic.
Good job
Peter

It's amazing what poor lighting can hide. :)

Great job Ty. I'll recommend this even to my music producing sound friends, as they usually only think about stage mics. They rarely have the understanding of mics used for video production. Thanks for taking the time to produce this.

Al
