Extract surround sound
on Dec 6, 2011 at 4:07:10 pm

I have a video file with 6 channel surround sound, and I need to extract the audio as separate files. I've tried a few converters, including SUPER, but none of them lets me extract more than 2 channels, unless I use a format like AAC or AC3 that supports surround (but doesn't work with any of my editors). So is there a tool or technique for extracting surround sound, preferably as multiple mono or stereo .wav files?

Thanks!

Hi David,

it's hard to give an exact answer as it depends on the source format. Could you tell us what the original video container is? (Such as .mov, mpeg etc) and then maybe what you intend to do with it as that can influence workflow.

It's an .mkv using the H.264 codec, and the audio is AC-3, but I can convert it to pretty much anything with an audio format that supports surround sound.

I need to edit a couple of the channels individually. The final mix will be stereo.

I'm assuming you're using Windows so a quick google search (since we're running Mac only here) found me two apps that will do the job for you as it seems:

1.) Smartlabs tsMuxer will be able to extract the AC3 out of the .mkv Link: http://smlabs.net/en/products/tsmuxer/
2.) Using BeSweet you will be able to grab the ac3 and spit out separate files Link: http://dspguru.doom9.net/

Hope that helps, good luck! :)

Speaking as someone who mixes and therefore creates surround productions , that ultimately end up as ac3 files etc on dvds, Id suggest that theyre in that format because people, just like me, dont want you accessing the components.
If youre supposed (and have permission) to do it then the owner of the work will be able to arrange whatever deliverables you need. If you dont have that permission..........
Dangerous territory.

I don't have any permission, it's purely for an exercise. As far as I know, it should be fine as long as I keep it private?
It probably wouldn't be in .mkv if it was for editing either.
