Here is another even worse example where not only does the audio sound distorted but it actually fades out too.

Hello Will and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Both sound like either a failing solder joint or a bad connection.

That they come and go is weird. I'd shake and wiggle all my audio connections and cables to see if I could make it happen.

I did know a guy with a studio in Boston that was taking radar hits from Logan Airport every time the array swung around past his attic studio...

I've heard that pattern when the batteries in a field mixer grow weak and then die. But not on again off again.

Ive heard this type of issue twice before.
Once it was (as already suggested) batteries nearing end of life, the other time it was a phantom power supply about to die.
