Is there a way of sending 4, 6,or 8 channels of multi channel audio over cat5 cable? [don't need video]
What do I need at the ends? D>A and A>D converters etc. and going into an analogue desk.
What I want to do is have 8+ audio channels one way [but 2 way would be even better] over a distance 200-500+ metres. Any ideas without using fibre optic cable as the cable is to be dumped after the event.

There's no problem with sending balanced, Line Level (+4dBu)signals over UTP CAT5e/CAT6 cable. That lets you stay in the analog realm, but confines you to the number of pairs available in the cable.

Any other solution would require A/D-D/A conversions, as you mentioned; standalone solutions include offerings from manufacturers such as Allen & Heath, Yamaha, etc.

There is a post regarding the "InstaSnake"

Wolfvid.com also has a PDF on Cat5 (right-click to download).
