Wireless mic frequencies
on Apr 14, 2010 at 8:52:55 pm

My friend is looking at some wireless lavs on e-bay some in the 600 and 700mhz frequencies, he says some of the e-bay adds say something about that frequency being dropped or blocked soon by the FCC, my question is if he is just using these wireless mics for weddings and private interviews and NOT for broadcasting, should he be concerned about those frequencies being blocked or discontinued by the FCC ? we are in the Chicago area, thanks

Hello Jonathan and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Last time I checked, your frequencies were not between 698 and 806 MHz.

Per your comment about broadcasting and weddings; the business you may be in makes no difference.

Jonathan,

Too many conditions remain unknown to determine if you'll be OK or not.

But operating frequency won't be a problem.

Jonathan, look at the Sennheiser USA website. Click on Professional Audio, Wireless Microphones, then look at the box on the right and click on Find Frequencies. A neat little link to the FCC will allow you to search for safe frequencies to use in your area. Anything between 698 - 806Mhz is forbidden after 6/12/10.

Joel, Jonathan,

And while those charts tell you about local TV station frequencies, there's a passel of other things that can disrupt your wireless reception.

Cell phones,
Nextel Phones,
other wireless mic systems left on that no one knows about.

etc.

Your motto should be, "Never take wireless reception for granted. Always listen all the time. Repeat. Always listen all the time.

Good advice Ty, always listen all the time, exactly what I've been doing for more than 25 years, but I agree, it's good to emphasize.
