Handheld mic needed
on Jan 10, 2010 at 5:37:01 pm

I'm looking at an upcoming job where neither a lav nor boom mic will be practical. So I think I need an old fashioned handheld local news style omni-directional dynamic. A hundred years ago this would have been an EV 635a. But there's got to be something better and better suited to suppressing the noise of being handheld. My camera has 48v phantom power, so I'm not limited to a dynamic mic, but I'm looking to spend as little as possible. (And no, Ty, a Schoeps cmc641 supercardioid is well outside of my budget for this.)

Ideas?

The EV RE50B is the industry standard for ENG. Bullet proof, weather proof and sounds great.

And if you want something that doesn't quite look so "retro" on camera - try the Beyer M-58.

Leno used to weild on on the "jaywalking" segments.

A lot more "modern" looking and so solid it will easily last you the rest of your career.

Under $250 at all the reputable mail order companies.

I second this. It's a good stick mic, maybe a little less low end than the RE-50 ("B" or not) and very little handling noise. The "teardrop" foam windball is a bit less odd-looking than the same thing on an RE-50 as well.

It's also got a long handle, which helps both the look and practical interviewing.

I have a Sennheiser e835 as a backup - it's also nice but I prefer the Beyerdynamic.

Hello Nick,

You have our answer. Thanks for stopping by.

PS: the cmc641 would not have been my choice for this application

[Ty Ford] "PS: the cmc641 would not have been my choice for this application"

Jeez, you mean there's ONE thing that it's not perfect for? (Just kidding, bud.)
