one technical question about Zoom H4N
on Nov 1, 2009 at 1:45:25 pm

Hello

I need information about Zoom H4N
I’m a classical musician, and I want to buy this device to record various concerts.
But I have also a good Sony camcorder (with –of course- a bad integrated microphone).
My question is :
Is it possible to use sometime the H4N as a simple external microphone, plugging it into the Jack 3.5 input of my camcorder?
(Instead of multiplexing with a software or buying separated microphone)

thanks in advance

Bonsoir Bertrand,

If the H4 passes audio in stand-by or record to its line out and your camera has a 1/8" stereo, unbalanced input, I think it might work.

The camera likely has a mic-level input, and the output of the H4N is line-level, so I think this would not work so well.

One thing you could do is sell your H4N and buy the new Zoom Q3. It's got the same microphones and recording capability as the H4N, plus it has an integrated video camera.

"likely" ?

You know what they say about assumptions.

Although the Q3 does look interesting. Does it have external audio inputs?

No external inputs on the Q3. Not an option for running double system in the audio bag. But, for people just looking for a point & shoot Flip-like video camera, the audio quality of the Q3 beats the pants off of everything. It "likely" has the best sounding built-in microphones of any video camera ever made. ;)
