Portable 4 Track Recording

I'm looking for a portable unit capable of recording 4 tracks simultaneously. I know about the Edirol r-44 and r-4 pro, but are there any other options to check out in this area?

Hello Gary,

I use a Sound Devices 744T. http://www.sounddevices.com/products/744t.htm

Most recently I used it to shoot this little piece because I was running camera and had four mics; two guitar amps and two mics.

I used a Sound Devices 442 mixer. Came out of its direct outs and into the 744T. It records poly wave files so I dragged one icon off of its HD into FCP and FCP created four tracks automatically.

Regards,

Ty Ford

Thanks guys. The Zoom gets two of it's tracks from a built in mic doesn't it? I'm looking for 4 distinct line-in's ideally. The Sound Devices unit looks great but runs a few thousand. The Edirol R-44 runs around $900. Is there anything else that you know of in this range or below? I'm considering the Mbox 2 Pro with a laptop also.

Thanks,
Gary R.

Thanks guys! That Zoom R 16 (when it becomes available) is exactly what I'm looking for at the right price, assuming it works well.

Thanks,
Gary R.
