SD 442 into Cam, Mic or Line level?
on Jun 5, 2008 at 1:31:06 am

I've got a dilemma...

I'm going out of a SD 442 into a Digibeta camera (and possibly a Z1) and not sure what to use, Line Out or Mic out level on the mixer to go into the camera.

I'm thinking on each device, both should be the matched, (mixer Line Out into camera Line In?) or Mic Level out into Camera Mic Level In? But is there a correct/ preferred way and which one should be used?

What do the ENG pro's use/ recommend? (line or mic?)

Line level is my choice. It's less likely to induce hum, RF noise, and although, negligible, it saves battery on the camera. Although the 422 has easily accessible switches, some popular mixers like the SD302 default to line level out and can only be changed through software setup.

Others may have a completely different opinion on the matter, however.

many thanks for the information.

Is this general practise though- to use the line level rather than mic level?

Yes, because your mixer's preamp is usually of much higher quality than the one built in to your camcorder. Going line-level into your camcorder will force you to use your mixer preamp and not your camcorder preamp. At least that's the way I look at it.
