Reversing waves?

If you have a constant noise in the background of an interview, can you record the noise and then cancel it out by reversing the wave.... or something like that... sorry not very tech.

Just heard this and wonder if its true or not?

Hello Robin and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Yes, wave or phase cancellation is the basis for most noise reduction circuits an algorithms.

How it gets done is a bit more tricky.

So if there is a noise going on during an interview,a say 1 min wild track of just the noise can be used to totally cancel out the noise??

Is it a very time consuming/expensive process? does it work on all noises,or some better than others? does it have to be a constant noise ?

Thanks

While theoretically possible, you'd have to have the exact same "random noise." That hasn't happened on this planet yet, to my knowledge.

Is it a very time consuming/expensive process? -- no
does it work on all noises,or some better than others? --no, yes
does it have to be a constant noise ? -- for best results, yes, constant and unchanging in content.

Your best bet is to try various softwares or even a hardware box like the izotope NRX.

There is no magic bullet. That stuff you see on CSI is NOT what you're going to get.
