low latency vs zero latency

I'm setting up the audio side of my video edit room. I will be mixing multiple tracks of audio to video and some foley/ADR as needed. I also do an occaisional voice over. Is zero latency a must have for this? The audio hardware within budget is all low or "ultra" low latency.

Hello Tim and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Low and zero, what to do?

I'd stay away from USB interfaces. I have yet to hear one that didn't have latency issues.

I'd go firewire. There is still a small amount of latency for audio but it has never been a problem for me.

Have you heard of problems with USB 2 hardware? The ones I'm looking at are USB 2. Theoretically, it should have better bandwidth than firewire. My setup uses a laptop with only 1 firewire port, so I need to keep that open for the video deck.
