Monitoring Audio During Filming
on Oct 15, 2007 at 4:49:59 pm

The past two shoots I have been on (both interviews), I have heard nothing but what I thought to be clean audio. Then when I capture footage, I'm surprised to hear things on the tape that I didn't hear during filming, including background noise and annoying hums and buzzing, presumably from the wireless lav mic. I've been able to get around these noises, but I know that won't always be the case and it will eventually catch up with me. I'm monitoring the audio with a pair of Sony headphones. Any tips?

All I can say is you need to be listening more carefully.

If you are otherwise distracted with the job of capturing the image of the shoot, you should bring along a competent audio assistant (at the very least) whose job is to carefully monitor the audio.

BTW... WHICH Sony headphones?

There must be dozens of models out there, of which, about 6 might be considered really suitable for critical monitoring.

Are you monitoring end of chain (ie the actual recording)
If you are, and the artifacts arent there (presuming you monitor loud enough, and the cans are enclosed enough to hear correctly what is going on, then maybe (but unlikely in a digital world) its being added at the capture statge, so how are you doing that - sdi embedded, analogue, firewire??

What are you plugging the phones into?
What Sony phones are you using?

Hey Guys...Thanks for the replies...

I suspected that my headphones aren't up snuff; they're the Sony MDR-V150 and I'm plugging them directly into the camera's stereo jack. I'm kind of a one man band, so a sound guy isn't really in the cards.

I'm capturing via firewire and my hunch is that the noise came into play during shooting, but I wasn't able to hear it.

Thanks again guys...

I suggest Sony MDR 7506 or the new Audio-Technica ATH-M50.
