RODE VideoMic Feedback
on Aug 10, 2007 at 3:25:00 pm

hi everyone, im planing on buying a RODE VideoMic for a short film i will be working on and for some interviews, but i want to know first if it is worth buying. i've seen some reviews from dealers and the say this is a great shotgun mic.

the reason that im buying this mic is because of my budget, i need a shotgun mic that i can afford.

so if you have any experience with the RODE VideoMic, i would love to hear it ...PLEASE!!

Thanks in advance.

Enrique B.

Not an answer to your question (as I don't own it), but...

Check out the video demonstration of it on this page:
http://www.dvestore.com/theatre/

In doing my own research on it I came across that page where they have a video in which they talk about it.

I too would like to know how it is from those who actually own it though.

Hope that helps some.

Mike

I have an on camera review of this mic in the video folder of my OnLine Archive.

You can see and hear how it sounds,

When you notice the directionality of the mic, remember I'm sitting in a recording studio with a lot of acoustic control. Normal environments will be a lot more slappy.

The Rode VideoMic is great for the price as a camera mounted mic. It is a mono mic that plugs into the mini TRS stereo jack on a camera. It feeds both inputs.

If your camera does not have XLR inputs, this is a possibility, BUT,
the best way to mic interviews is NOT with a camera mounted mic. You need to get closer, much closer.

You can get an extender cable for the VideoMic, but it is unbalanced and the longer the cable, the greaterthe possibility of interference.

This is a prosumer piece of gear that can work well but it has limitations. Rode also sells a mini TRS to XLR adapter and a dead cat for wind protection. BOth work well.

thanks a lot Ty for your feedback, i have a canon GL2 camcorder so thats why i was thinking on buying this mic, since other mics have xlr conections i would have to buy an xlr adapter and for the moment thats out of my budget.

now another question, i know there is a newer version of the videomic that has a -10db and -20db cut switch. is this the only thing that changes on the new videomic? is the quality the same on both?

im asking this because im buying it on BHphoto and they don have the videomic 2.

Hello Henry.

Peter Freedman hasn't sent me a sample of the new one. There is a pad on the Rode stereo mic, though, so it's possible.
