copy protection for audio CD
on May 11, 2007 at 1:06:08 pm

I have a client who would now like me to add some copy protection to his audio CDs. However I am not fimiliar with anything out there. For video we used to use Macrovision at the duplicators.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!! James

No such thing.

Ask the major record companies about that.

Sorry.

Copy protection's a bit of a contentious issue, when it comes to audio CD's. Witness the debacle surrounding the software Sony started putting on its CDs to prevent copying, which caused a flood of Mac users unable to get the darned things to play or even eject.

If your client wants to built DRM software into copies of their music, they'll need to release on a format other than traditional CD audio (eg. CDROMs containing DRM-equipped MP3s or Windows Media files).

Of course, I'm no expert on the matter. Since you have a history with Macrovision, you should probably give them a call and see if they have any products that would suit your purpose.

Thanks for everyone input.

From everyone's reponse and what I could (or could not) find an audio CD protection system that works does not exist.

Thanks again, James

Check out this company. Hexalock

http://hexalock.co.il/

We've used their product with great success to copy protect Flash content on CD. I've never used it for traditional CD's but...their website claims it works with Orange book standard CD's.

I looked at their website and it looks like it is mainly for data.

They state the the protected audio CDs will not play in regular audio CD players so for my situation that would not work.

Thanks for the info! James
