Seeking USB interface suggestions for Voice-Overs
on Sep 28, 2006 at 1:39:28 pm

Hi,
I want to record some voice-overs for a documentary, probably using a Rode NT-1A microphone (requires phantom power) into my Mac (Final Cut Pro) via USB without spending a fortune. There's seems to be a lot of USB interfaces on the market with similar characteristics (Edirol-UA25, Lexicon Omega, M-Audio) but it's hard to tell which one has the best pre-amp. I am hoping someone has first hand experience with these.
thanks

Hello Kalunga,

For my taste, I would recommend the Alesis io 2.
It gives you high-end A/D conversion 24bit/48k, is USB powered (supplies Phantom) and has 2 XLR, 2 balanced 1/4 inputs. It's priced around $150. Hope this helps.

But gettting a really good preamnp is another matter.....

You can spend $1K on a really good preamp.

And don't forget; it's the mic and preamp that determine the sound.
