Mic for bicycle racer in a race!
on May 19, 2006 at 9:07:07 pm

OK, so i need to put a mic on a bike racer who will be moving at speeds of up to 60mph. i put the mic under his jersey and mainly i got material scratch, i figured having the mic exposed would be nothing but wind...

any ideas?

also, i want to get a wireless set-up that has a lot of range. any systems come to mind? i'd rather not spend a lot, but if it's less expensive and doesn't work, then it's wasted money.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thank you in advance,

Try this. It's about the best thing for your situation, but at winds of 60 mph, I'm not sure it will be totally clean.

Also experiment with mic placement. Try the riders helmet, adjacent to the forehead.
As far as wireless systems go, Lectrosonics Digital Hybrid is my recommendation (, but of course, expensive. The Sony UWP series is a good lower-cost system.

Let us know what you come up with and how it worked.

will-

thank you for the info. it is very much appreciated. i'll see how the rycote windscreens work. i tried a sony UWP, but the range didn't hold up that well. i may rent a lectrosonics and see how it goes with one of those prior to a purchase.

again, thank you and when i shoot next i'll do a post and let you know how it goes!

Most people use Lectro's 100mw TX but you can get a 250mw TX from Lectro. It eats batteries faster but has a very long range. I'd go in the helmut.

thank you for the info. i didn't know lectro made a 250mw. that should help on the distance for sure... i'll look into it. i'm going to rent a wireless kit and see how it goes prior to making a purchase.

i'll also try a helmet rig-up too.

again thank you and glory to the cow!
