Audio hardware input question
on Nov 18, 2005 at 5:09:33 pm

Hello folks,

I need to do some voice over work for my documentary. I own the mic, equiped with XLR output and the G5 w/ Final Cut Pro and Avid.

I'm looking for some type of card/box/interface that will get me from XLR audio into my computer. I'm not looking for some huge I/O video device, as I'm only using DV from camera input. I just need XLR to FCP input.

Do small mixers or boxes exist with Firewire or USB connectivity, or XLR audio to USB/Firewire?

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

Check out products from Edirol and M-Audio. They both have inexpensive boxes that will accept your mic's XLR input and interface with your G5 using Firewire or USB. I don't know if you'll get enough level if you just plug your mic into the G5 using an adaptor that changes the XLR to mini-plug.

Samson makes a LD condenser mic with a USB connection. Haven't tried it, but that would be the simplest.

Good audio requires good equipment, and knowing how best to use it.

I've actually gotten some pretty good results with a good mic, mixer and the analog inputs of my laptop.
