iPad movie plays in QT Player but won't import
on Oct 2, 2017 at 7:43:10 pm

Pro 2017
Created movies from 2017 iPad Pro 4K 30fps
All the movies play in QT Player X, but movies greater than 3GB won't import. Media Encoder produces corrupt file message.
Any suggestions.

maybe fat32 file size limitations, try exfat or ntfs format instead.

The movie file is on a Mac OS extended external RAID, not FAT32.

try a physical tether into computer's usb port and copy/paste with itunes directly., maybe the app is running out of ram while loading.

Only a couple of movies remain on the iPad with which to try that. New to the iPad, I don't understand how to "copy/paste with iTunes directly".

I imported two movies from iPad into Photos library but
- QT Player 7 said it contained invalid data and would not play it, while
- MPEG Streamclip simply froze, and
- QT Player X played it just fine.

MPEG Streamclip and QT Player 7 produced same results as Premiere Pro with the other movies on the MacPro's media drive. They'll open and play the smaller movies but not the bigger ones.

BTW, re memory issue: How would PPro run out of memory (without an error message to that effect) on a paltry 10GB file while QT Player X doesn't?

Any other ideas how to make the movie file so the other apps can play it?

once they're onto the computer, try transcoding to another format like animation/png/prores/ audio .wav with some sort of quicktime converter software, or at least find out what video codec they're using with mediainfo.

ac 1 and AAC codecs, but can't convert using Media Encoder, QT Player 7, or MPEG Streamclip because they think the file is invalid. QT Player X will convert but only to a quarter of the frame size and a tenth of the file size (not my aim).

There are a lot of people who run into problems with Videos from Smart Phones and Tablets because they are variable frame rate.

The most common suggestion is to transcode them with Handbrake to a constant frame rate Codec.

"MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTO: If you think three copies of your media or project are enough.
Take a moment to place a value on them and then maybe add two more.
Hard Drives are now stupidly cheap. A RE-SHOOT AND YOUR TIME AREN'T."

Thank you for that Handbrake suggestion.

I realized that I've overlooked one important detail. The movies were recorded on the iPad NOT using the Camera app, but using FiLMiC Pro app recording in their Extreme setting.

I've stumbled upon a workaround however.
1. Open the movie in QT Player X.
2. Choose File>Duplicate
3. After it has run that process (the app will change the name of the window by appending the word "copy"), choose File>Save and navigate to a destination and save.
4. Import that new duplicate file into Premiere Pro.
*Note this is not the same as duplicating the file in the Finder.

I'm continuing to troubleshoot the FiLMic Pro workflow and will post back with news.

Re: iPad movie plays in QT Player but won't import SOLVED

SOLVED (I think)

I made another recording with the FiLMiC Pro app. I turned off the “Enable Time Code Track” feature under the app’s CMS menu setting. The resultant movie (while still grayed out in the Finder list view) DID import into Premiere with no problem. It also opened with QT Player 7, MPEG Streamclip and of course QT Player X.
Seems there’s some sort of interoperability bug in that feature.
thanks for your help.
