importing HQ1920x1080 50i file to PPcc2017 shows 25fps in Project window
on Aug 20, 2017 at 1:53:33 pm

Project requires 1920x1080 50i.
Camera = Sony EX-1r
Files in camera thumbnail media preview indicate 1920 50i but when it's imported from Media Browser, the project frame rate column indicates 25 fps.

I haven't delivered the files to the client yet. How do I explain this? What happened?

Thanks,
Hal

50i (interlaced) is 25 fps. (50 fields).
If they wanted 50 fps the camera should have been set to 50p (progressive)
I think this camera does 50p only in 1280x720.

[Ann Bens] "If they wanted 50 fps the camera should have been set to 50p (progressive)"

The client requires 1920x1080 50i. NOT 50p.
And yes, you are absolutely correct that the EX1r does not record at 50p 1920x1080.

Since you are Adobe professional:
During playback of the camera files "shot at 1920x1080 50i" I noticed drop-outs on both my 23-inch apple cinema display and the 2016 Macbookpro 15 retina, (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16gb ram, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB, powering through a StarTech T2 breakout box to the display). Both monitors in MBP retina and the Cinema display monitor show the dropouts. I tried to identify the frames where the dropouts occur by going frame by frame in the area of concern, but could not find the error.
?Does this mean it's a playback issue?
I never had dropouts with 25p....
Thanks in advance for your reply
Hal

If you want 50 frames per second, you'll have to first use a tool like VirtualDub to deinterlace with frame rate doubling to 50p (which means video will only be at half the vertical quality) instead of blending the interlaced fields down to 25p which is what most video software will try to do. You have to choose between full resolution at 25p and halved vertical resolution at 50p; if the destination is a computer or television then 50p is generally going to be a better choice despite the vertical quality loss, and it sounds like that's what you want to do anyway.

Did you intend to say 50p or 50i?
Perhaps I misunderstand your instructions. Does the Vdub double the frames so the end result is 50p???
The Director wants all cams at 50i 1920x1080. So by using Virtual Dub I will be able to import 50i 1920x1080 into Premier Pro properly? (Actually, he is editing with Sony Vegas. I always check my cam files in Premier Pro CC17 before delivering to the client. )

Thanks for your response.

Dont start messing about with Virtual Dub and try to change it if the Director wants all the camera's set to 50i.
Premiere is importing your footage properly.
There is nothing wrong with those setting.
50i = 25 fps with 50 fields (the correct term should have been 25i, but nobody uses that).

VirtualDub has a deinterlace filter that gives you the choice between blending the interlaced fields to get half-rate progressive (25p) or doubling the fields to cover the entire frame which doubles the frame rate (50p). The only reason I suggested VirtualDub is that it gives you the ability to control the deinterlacing. It's been a while since I pulled interlaced video into Premiere so I don't recall how it handles the deinterlacing.

Are you trying to output 25p, 50p, or 50i?

Hello Hal,

I´m with Ann Benns - and think, that all is okay with your footage, it´s just about a linguistical "arrangement":
50 i(nterlaced) is a 25 frame material.
Activate in your metadatas "field order" (or have a look at -> metadata) and you will see 25 Framerate but also "upper field".
(my screenshot is from german settings, sorry, "oberes Halbbild" means "upper field")
With progressive material it would say "progressive".

Check, if your timeline settings are something with "i" and choose interlaced in the export-window with your certain codec to keep interlace on delivery.

Good luck,

Jo
