toggle SINGLE track height (or individual track height preset)
on Jul 30, 2017 at 6:57:45 pm

I am editing a new project and just switched over to CC from CS6. I am working on audio, and I would like to be able to toggle the size of an individual track (this is something that I do all the time while working on audio).

It would appear you can create "track height presets," but the presets apply to ALL tracks (not just an individual track), so if you have 32 tracks, a preset you create will save the height of all those tracks "ganged." You can't apply a height to just one track. When would I ever want to apply different and specific height settings (other than "all tracks this height") to ALL my tracks?! The track assignments change for every project! I want to be able to expand and contract the SINGLE track I'm working on, and not by having to scroll the wheel on my mouse or hit a button combination 10 or twenty times every time I want to do this.

Is there seriously NO WAY to toggle a single track's height in Premiere now? You used to have the track height toggle arrow that would allow you to minimize a track, and then when you expanded it, it would go back to whatever size the track had previously been. And FWIW, this button took up almost NO space, so I can't imagine any reason for Adobe to remove it.

Please tell me Adobe did not remove one of the most basic and often used track features when "improving" Premiere (being able to quickly minimize a track, and then return to the height you had previously selected when you need to work on that track again).

p.s. It's also infuriating that the visual wave form is now presented as only the "upper half" of the waveform. Does Adobe just hate audio engineers?

This is doable. Hover your mouse over the track you want to minimise/maximise (NOT on the timeline, hover over the control panel on the left, where the mute/solo/toggle etc controls are). Scroll up or down on your mouse to minimise/maximise the individual track you want to change the height of. Not sure about keyboard shortcuts, I don't use this feature enough to give it a shortcut.

Hi Jonas,

Ann addressed the single track height adjustment and I have the solution for waveforms.

Under the "hamburger" stacked icon next to the sequence's tab name:

DESELECT Rectified Audio Waveforms and you will be back to full height representation.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response, Vashi.

Ann's response actually just reiterates what I said in my original post (having to hover over a certain spot and scroll my mouse wheel isn't really a viable option to open/collapse a track as often as I do).

However, thank you SO MUCH for the information on deselecting rectified audio waveforms. I really appreciate it!

There is probably a shortcut for the feature, now that you know the feature does exist, you can go looking for it. Premiere is a primarily a picture editing program - all the soundies I know work in Pro tools, so I'd hardly think sound features are a priority in premiere, especially when there are so many other bugs in Premiere that need ironing out!

Depending on the project and if it's only "minor" mixing (dialogue and just a few SFX's), it's usually not worth the headache of exporting from Adobe and importing to Pro Tools and then re-exporting/importing once you're done (especially if it's mostly just putting fadein/fadeout on clips).

When you edit and do sound, it's just easier to stay in Premiere unless you're really rolling up your sleeves to do some audio magic.

It looks like they changed expand/collapse to mouseover-and-scroll-to-resize, so there's no short cut key to expand/collapse a single track anymore. Bummer for me, but I guess I'll just get used to it.
