Suddenly this "workstation" can't even keep up with my other baby PC
on Jul 4, 2017 at 1:42:46 am

This is so aggravating. What I used to be able to do, albeit very slowly, on my crap PC, I can't do on this supposedly superior PC. Rendering is a crapshoot, sometimes it encodes all the way, other times it "fails". about 10 minutes in (this with just some minor lumetri tweaks). Also, I'll be working on something and the source and program monitors will go black. You can see the video of I play it or scrub the timeline, but if I leave it, they go black. I have to shut PPro and restart.

I replaced the graphics card, as mentioned previously. I know what I'm doing as far as that's concerned so I didn't accidentally not set it correctly or anything. I've got about 12 more days to test this thing and I've got a 16 gig RAM chip coming Thursday. But I really dread having to yank my two HDD's out, as well as the new RAM, AND put back the graphics card that came with this.

I thought XPS 8910's were decent, if not top of the line. Does any of this sound familiar to anybody? Am I rendering to the wrong hard drive? Just to summarize,
I have Premiere Pro and Project files on my main HDD, media and cache files on a second HDD, and am encoding to the third HDD.

As far as the source and program monitors going black I don't know what the deal is with that.

Can you post as many hardware specs as possible about your system like current amount of RAM, DDR-X, number and size of sticks, Video Card, CPU, etc. etc.

Also which Version of Windows are you using 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 and 32 or 64bit.
OpenCL or CUDA you know the whole ball of wax.

I will try to help if possible.

I run primarily Mac but I ran into a very similar issue on my PC recently.
I started off reseating everything from Power Connectors to RAM Modules and every expansion card that was in the system. I even reset my BIOS back to the Optimized Factory Defaults and also ran MEM Test with no luck. In the end a new clean install of the OS took about a day once all of Windows Updates were done. I must say though the difference was well worth the time it took to reinstall everything. It seems like it's 10 times faster now.

Here's the MEM Test Link.

http://www.memtest.org

"MY MEDIA MOTO: If you think three copies of your media is enough.
Take a moment to place a value on it and then maybe add two more.
Hard Drives are now stupidly cheap. A RE-SHOOT AND YOUR TIME AREN'T."

Thanks, Brent. I'll get that information for you, but as I said, even my consumer level PC with 12 gigs of RAM, i5 core processor, integrated Intel graphics card, etc., while slow, never caused these problems. Let me run Speccy and I'll get you the details. For now I can tell you it's running
64 bit Windows 10 with updates,
1 stick of 16 gig of DDR-4 RAM (soon to be 32 gigs),
i7 processor (6700 version. Yeah, I know...),
CUDA (which, after the encode failed and I re-opened the project was told by PPro that my PC doesn't have CUDA and would start in software mode, another glitch the other PC never had).
And, yes, I did install the CUDA driver from Nvidia and updated the drivers for the new graphics card (GeForce 1050).

I guess that's everything you asked for, actually. Thanks again.

Oh, and I just got this 4 days ago. I've got 11 more days to get it right before I bring it back.

you need to start from scratch.

for example, did you ever change the old graphics drivers?
is nvidia control panel set to use premiere.exe 'always' while loaded?

have you done a stress test on your components with passmark95 to detect overheating and damaged parts?

at this point, I'd wipe the OS, reinstall only necessary drivers and check temperatures as overheating can cause software failure.

You might want to wipe and reload everything. It sucks but sometimes that is the only thing that works.

I did the next best thing. I brought it back (it was a previous return, now I know why), and got the XPS 8910 which just went on sale for only 50 bucks more than I paid for the 8910. Currently setting it all up. Sorry about that loooooong list of crap before, I had no idea when I pasted it and posted. Anyway, I'll let you know how this one is going. So far it's not seeing my 3rd HDD and none of my USB ports work except the ones in back that my keyboard and mouse are plugged into, grrrrr....

btw, this one is i7 7700 build. It's running a lot smoother, but I can't get one HDD to show up, and it's the one I saved all my stuff on before I wiped the other PC. Aggravating!!! Plus the front USB ports don't work. Oh well, time to watch the fireworks. The ones in my head, that is!!!

Is the hd motor spinning? Are both sata and power plugged in?
Is sata enabled in bios?
Is the usb header port plugged into the motherboard?

Have you gone into the Device Manager to see if there are any Drivers that aren't installed.
You would see an Icon that looks like a question mark or a triangle with an exclamation mark in it.

Dell has really great support and drivers are generally very easy to find on there site.

As far as the USB ports, the wires inside this thing are so short that when you lift the power supply module, which you're supposed to do to install a graphics card, it unplugged the USB ports. That's working now. Still trying to figure out the HDD. Everything is plugged in tight, and I reset the BIOS to default, as suggested by Dell, previously as a "fix" for the USB port problem. BTW, the HDD doesn't even show up under disk management, so at this point I have no idea what the problem is. Once I wake up I'll play with it again. I have the cover off anyway since I'm expecting my RAM chip tomorrow.

Oh, and it's the 8920. The 8910 is the one I returned.

Seriously, in all my years of working with computers this has to be the most unintuitive, unresponsive PC I've ever dealt with!!! I'm trying to take a simple screen shot of my disk management window so you can see what it's showing for the missing hard drive. Press "scrnshot", you say? NO! Nothing happens. All of the "simple" procedures, like pressing alt, windows key, F3 and standing on your head while tapping the screen shot key do nothing. This is sooooo friggin' aggravating!!!

Anyway, disk management shows the "third" HDD as being "Dynamic" rather than "Basic", and "Foreign" rather than "online". There's also the exclamation point in a yellow triangle.

Whether it's actually talking about the missing HDD or some mysterious other HDD, I can't tell you, but I do know that I'm increasingly getting fed up with the constant aggravation of trying to do something that's been simple and second nature for over 20 years and having all these curveballs thrown at me. Maybe I'll take up fishing.

And now, once again, after my usual online tirade, the solution suddenly presents itself. Right clicking on the "Foreign" hard drive brings up a menu asking if I want to import the Foreign HDD into the system. Clicking on that then brings up the opportunity to convert it to a "Simple" whatever it's called, and now the hard drive shows up, with all data intact. I have no idea why I always have to make myself look like a fool before the solution appears, but it's worked this way for years. Now, to figure out why print screen isn't printing the screen. Temper tantrum to follow shortly, I believe ;-)

WRONG!!! Contrary to every single link I've followed, that procedure doesn't work. I found the solution on the most obscure message board ever, that has nothing to do with Dell or Windows 10. The solution, which the poster pointed she found nowhere in the official documentation, is to press and hold the fn button and then press print screen, a method supposedly only necessary on laptops. But it worked. Computers....grrrrrr...

Anyway this baby is screaming right now. Can't wait to get my other 16 gig RAM chip tomorrow. Now to shoot something worthwhile.

And as usual, thanks to everybody for trying to help. This was a weird one. Thread closed!

Much more versatile is Snipping Tool from Microsoft.

I said THREAD CLOSED!!! 😉 J/K yeah one of the links mentioned the snipping tool but how can that be easier than pressing "fn" and "print screen"?

Anyway, this PC, like the one I brought back, seems to go black in the source and program monitors when I add Cosmo and FilmConvert. Not a big deal as I was just experimenting and prefer not to use those, but it's odd that a much more powerful box than the one I've been using these past few years can't handle that. Do you think the GPU is faulty? It's an NVidia GeForce GTX 1050. It handles everything else smoothly, even plays back 4K with a whole bunch of lumetri tweaks plus a plugin smoothly with no dropped frames, even as I tweak the video. This is one of those questions that is hard to verbalize in google.

Is it possible that this is just a problem with Windows 10.

I've been running Win 7 and won't update because of all of the Win 10 issues I hear about.

Didn't you say you were using a bunch of plugins? You need to update them.
