How do I export captions?
on May 22, 2017 at 6:28:52 pm

Hello everyone, newbie here
I want to create a DVD with captions in different languages (so that from the menu you can choose the language of the subtitles). I have already created the captions in Premiere Pro CC, but I don't know how I can export only the subtitle track (without the footage) in order to import it in Encore once I create the DVD. Could you tell me how to do it please?
Thanks in advance!

I wonder if you are talking about "captions" made in the titler or some other kind of captions. I understand that titles made in the titler are actually an "effect" embedded in the Premiere Project file and not retrievable. At least for CC "2013." Not separate files like in FCP 7. Some folks make titles and subtitles in AE, which seem to be separate files.

If they are made with the CC tool just export as .scc file.
If they are made with the Title tool it's complicated. Copy the titles to a new timeline and export as EDL. Then export all titles. Extract the text from the titles. Together with the EDL create an Encore text file.

No, I didn't make my captions in the titler. I clicked on New item => Captions and then selected "open captions".

I was wrong with my first comment. PPro doesn't seem to export .scc any more.
So select the caption stream and export that one as .srt file.

On the web you'll find a lot of free utilities to convert .srt to .scc files to be used as captions.
There are also tools which allow to convert .srt to Encore script files for subtitles. If you are on Mac You can use my TitleExchange. The free version allows to convert 50 titles at a time, you have to split larger files and rejoin them.

Subtitles are often easier to handle compared to caption when there is more than 1 language.

Thank you Andreas, I've just installed your TitleExchange, as I work on Mac. Let's see how it works!

Hi, still me. I installed your TitleExchange and found several programs (avidMarkerTool, docx2Table, gRender, gText, psTitles, TitleExchange, X-Title Extractor, X-Title Importer and X-Title Render). I actually don't know which one I should use. I tried with TitleExchange, X-Title Extractor and X-Title Importer but It looks like I can't import .srt captions. What I need is to convert .srt to .scc captions.

You asked:
"... in order to import it in Encore once I create the DVD..."

In TitleExchange click the text in main window, select "SRT" as source and "Adobe Encore" as destination format.
Then import the .srt

Ok... I managed to import captions in Encore, though I have another problem. Encore doesn't maintain font and color and that's pretty important to me, as I made the captions with different colors in order to distinguish who is talking in the video.

This is a screenshot to show you what I see with the text

I converted the .srt file in .txt file with the online converter, but when I want to import it to Encore it says "invalid line found in subtitle script" for each line of the script.
