why multiple MTS files from long clip?
on Apr 24, 2017 at 6:12:13 pm

I keep meaning to ask this, but never do since it doesn't really affect anything but here it goes:

When i shot a long single clip (like over 15 minutes is about where this starts), it shows up on the card 6 times. Identical file, recorded 6 times. I just did a thing last night that was 74 minutes long. One shot, but 6 identical clips. Anyone?

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

What are you shooting with? That may help us resolve the multi-clip mystery!

System:
Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
Win 7 64-bit
32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2015.02 (as of 6/2016)
256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF.

Hi,

Sorry, ya that woulda been some decent pertinent info, huh? I'm shooting the Sony NX5, recording on the 128GB FMU128 card/drive.

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

Cameras recording to cards formatted with the FAT32 file spec have a file size limit of 4GB. After writing 4GB worth of data, it starts a new file, but adds info to show that the 2nd file is a continuation of the clip. Once the 2nd file reaches 4GB, it starts another. In the OS, it appears that each file is a duplicate of the one before, but this is just the 'spanning' mechanism at work. If you play file number 3, you're actually playing the entire video clip, not just File 3.

Okie dokie. Thanks for the explanation. I still don't really "get it", but that's okay. :-)
