New (2016) mac book pro and Premiere 2017 CC

Hi All,

I am considering buying one of the new Mac Book Pro laptops, to use as my mobile Premiere editing and After Effects system.. I do most o my work on a nice iMac. And I have read a ton of reports, and seen youtube videos of people complaining of Premiere 2017 not working well on the new Mac Book pros.. Most of the reports I have looked at are several months old..Wondering what the current state is?? Thinking that Adobe or Apple have updated the drivers for the Radeon Graphics chipset to be more optimized to the software ?? Anyone ?? I am particularly interested in it performance editing 4k footage.. ( Yes I know that FCP works great with the 4K stuff on the newer machines,, But I am very much a creative cloud user.. )

Thanks to all !!!

I would wait or get another computer. Premiere is running very slow on my Macbook Pro. The latest update did not help ☹ There is something wrong with the combination of 2016 Macbook Pro and Premiere.

Hi Felix

Thanks for the response.. Thats a shame.. Did you install the April 19 release of 2017.1 Premiere ?? I am not sure if the problem lies with Apple here, or Adobe.. ( I suspect Apple)
For the first time am actually considering switching to the PC platform.. Seems like you get much more for your dollar.. I love the Mac operating system.. But I need to be able to do pro work.. And It seems like there are just lots of problems with Premiere on the new MacBook Pro..

Thanks !!

Macbook Pro
i7 2,7 GHZ
Radeon Pro 460
1TB SSD

Yes, quite a lot of 4k. Things have been very choppy before but it's working pretty well now.

Just tried putting a XAVC-I 4K 25P clip in a timeline and a LUT applied in Lumetri. It plays fine in 1/2 resolution. A bit choppy at 1/1

Playing a 5K Red Raw file plays well at 1/4 resolution.

Prores 422HQ 4K 25P seems to be playing smoothly at full resolution.

Just to get an idea!

Awesome thats great news..!!! One more question if I may.. do you find that the large trackpad is causing any issues when you are typing on the keyboard ??

Thanks so much !!

Been having same issues as Felix, haven't tested new update yet, but will when I can...
As for MacBook Pro itself...

Its ok, Keyboard is a shock in the beginning and I kinda freaked out. Really noisy. but actually you learn to type differently and therefore faster in the end. I now like it. but it takes getting used too.

Touch bar is for me a gimmick, nothing I've used on it is anyway a great new thing. Its ok. Its not bad. But it isn't something to get excited about. Maybe as apps start mapping more stuff too it.
But then you rarely reach up there for anything. Just be careful not to accidentally send emails before they are finished. Send button right there on touchbar. Have accidentally sent stuff.

I got a caldigit thunderbolt 3 dock and thats great to have to just patch everything in at your desk with one cable.

Hey Mike,

I've been trying to make my 2016 MacBook Pro work well with premiere (my 2nd one, they replaced the first) but it just doesn't not work well for a professional workflow, not with the money being thrown at it, I just can't wrap my head around it. I should've kept my late 2013 MacBook Pro with the Nvidia card, I swear it ran faster than this model.

I'm using their top of the line unit with 1tb storage and it can't handle a 4k workflow.
I've done the updates, turned down the settings to 1/8th, and it just is so sluggis! (good luck playing back 4k phantom 4 footage without rendering, its impossible) The "Metal" Playback is a joke too, its completely broken, slow, and does not work.

Looking at moving back to PC unless adobe and apple learn to work together. As of now, this isn't worth the headache and money for all this. I will miss the Mac OS as well though thats for sure.
