Premiere on Laptop will not read AVI files
on Mar 8, 2017 at 6:30:43 pm

I'm working on a project on both my Desktop and Laptop running windows 10 and using the latest version on Premiere Pro 2017. My footage includes a folder of .AVI files that import fine on my desktop but will not import at all on my laptop. I get the "unsupported or damaged file" error. I installed VLC on my laptop which allows me to now view the files but premiere will not recognize the clips as valid.

All of my projects and footage are being worked on from an external hard drive and I've set the drive letter to be the same on both computers. If I import the footage on my Desktop then plug the hard drive into my laptop, all of my footage appears except for the avi clips. Premiere prompts me to locate them and when I do, it gives me the 'generic import error'. I'm really not sure what to do at this point and any help would be appreciated.

Transcode using Adobe Media Encoder. Treat the transcoded video as if it was the camera original stuff.

I tried importing into AME and it's giving me a corrupt file error.

You may have to use something else like the freebie Handbrake to transcode.

It appears that the required codec may not be installed on your laptop. Determine what codec was used to encode the video, then you can figure out how to install it.

I fixed it by installing Fraps on my laptop, the program used to record the footage. Problem solved!
